#Syria: #Refugee Crisis Deepens

Since Syrian protests developed into a civil war, the entire region has experienced an exodus of refugees from the violence. More than 250,000 Syrians have registered in neighbouring countries with the UN High Commission on Refugees, while many have fled without registering, and more than a million are internally displaced.

Complicating matters further, Syria has long been home to refugees fleeing other conflict zones in the region. Communities of Iraqis in Damascus and Palestinians near the south western border now find themselves uprooted for a second time.

Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq have opened their borders to many of those fleeing the Syrian conflict. Other governments and international agencies have responded with aid. But with approximately 50,000 fleeing Syria every month, more and more refugees risk the deprivation of shelter, food, security, and other basic human rights.

#Qatar- #Mauritania discord story outsourced by #Jordan website?

  1. An image from AlAkhbar English. The story has been published on several websites in Arabic and English. Everyone loves a good rumor! Al Babwa stands out because it doesn’t love its own stories enough to post them to Twitter, but has been incredibly fortunate in finding others willing to do it instead.
  2. 1. The flagship website of the Jordan-owned Al Bawaba Network, albawaba.com quoting Mauritanian Siraj newspaper, but neglecting to mention the Arab Press Network (http://www.arabpressnetwork.org/) description of it as a “pro-Islamist daily edited by Ahmad Al Wadi’a, a leading spokesperson of the Islamist movement”. For an indication of the quality of “news” favored by AlBawaba.com, check out this page from June 2011 highlighting another rumor, about the Emir of Qatar’s wife Sheikha Mozah allegedly spending $2m on plastic surgery to trim her derriére. Oddly enough, there are no tweets from @AlBawaEnglish to promote their story.
The Al Bawaba Network also operates menareport.com.

Relief effort for #Syria’s Refugees in #Jordan

Syrian Refugees Flee Across the Border

Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), a relief and development organization based in the D.C. metro area, announced today its humanitarian effort to assist nearly 5,500 displaced Syrian refugees in Jordan. According to the latest estimates by the United Nations, more than 5,000 civilians have been killed as a result of the escalating violence in Syria. Neighboring countries are witnessing a mass influx of refugees fleeing the crippling violence and harsh winter conditions. IRUSA’s latest initiative, a project called Urgent Assistance to Syrian Refugee Families in Jordan, will provide help to 5,500 Syrian refugees in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

In collaboration with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO), Islamic Relief USA will provide monthly food packets consisting of rice, sugar, vegetable oil, pasta, powdered milk, baby formula, white beans, salt, tomato paste, cheese, and chicken bouillon cubes. Also, families will be supplied with non-food items such as diapers, hygiene products and detergent.

“The human toll of the Syrian uprising is undoubtedly grave,” said Abed Ayoub, CEO of Islamic Relief USA. “Families who are fleeing the violence are bringing almost nothing with them as they make the long trip across the border in search of safety, food and shelter. From experience we know that as the violence continues, the number of refugees fleeing the violence will only rise. This initiative is a lifeline to those we are able to reach.”
